Pulaski & The Bear

~~~
~~~

Pulaski pitched his tent in a juniper grove

a bear crackfully approached looking for berries

the bear’s head was all nose & he was a big one

   “go away, bear, go away!” hollered Pulaski…

~

The bear stood up ~ taller than the woodsman

who stepped back & hollered again, “go away, bear, go away!”

Pulaski backed behind the tent & backed into the bushes

where he turned around & ran 20,000 leagues in 40 seconds…

~

He returned the next day with

a gallon can of red pepper that he threw

all over the ground &

   never saw his fuzzy-eared friend again…

~

It was about this time that I met Pulaski

he was taller than most fellers & his strides were long

his hair was tied behind his head

   he waved hello reluctantly as he strode up the highway…

Parading…

Hundreds of demonstrators from 46 states arrived in Washington DC in December, 2011.  They marched and staged demonstrations, including occupying the offices of their senators and representatives, in a brave attempt to take the goverment back from big corporations & the filthy rich… (UPI / Kevin Deitsch)

Pulaski & The Deep Ravine

~~~
~~~

With a pack bigger than himself on his back

he trudged thru the night across the salt flats

the full moon was in command beautifully

   Pulaski blinked & blinked, sleep deprived, & shuffled onward…

~

Suddenly a deep ravine yawned before him

aghast he peered into its long dark depths

oh boy, he turned around & crawled into his bag

   slept ’til dawn broke out all over the place…

~

After breakfast he looked & looked all around

he strode in circles all over blank terrain

there was no ravine, just flats, distant hills

   and a brain in his head thawed out by the sun…

Yuma

~~~
~~~

Yuma’s “good morning” skies

are

the desert goddess’s eyes

barely open now

and awaiting

her nausea to go away

while radiating more n’ more

solar rays

tainted pretty pink, tainted gothic purple

and finally flashing their blue baby blue

all over the place

and the desert goddess moans

“Is this Goonsville or

is this the ghost town called Love?”

Another High Noon (#2)

~~~
~~~

I couldn’t tell, I wasn’t sure, my aura was foggy

despite two shots of grace I still felt groggy

this broken-down saloon must be infested with ghosts

each group talked past the other as if the other could not be seen…

~

The Tea Party folks, most old & fat, loaded & cocked their guns

the Wall Street Occupiers pitched their tents & had no funds

“oh Mary, oh Mary,” I cried, “can’t you do something here?”

the barmaid folded her hands, prayed for a more harmonic scene…

~

There is bad ground & good ground

in this American ghost town

in which the haunted saloon moans its sad tune

which echoes & re-echoes around every broken-down thing…

Pulaski & The Great Switcherroo

~~~
~~~

Pulaski was hitch-hiking but mostly hiking

walking & walking some more, stalking the end

of another endless highway

in the parched desert of his particular dreams ~

~

He found someone doing the same damn thing

more or less but in the opposite direction

they met for some damn reason on the island

between lanes & the other feller fired one up ~

~

Oh brother oh brother let me tell you

another tall one not too accurately true

it’s fine & dandy finding ye in the middle of no-where

wind blasting, sun growing long our kinky knotty hair ~

~

Two lonesome wanderers of the wasteland

they departed each others company

high & happy, each heading back the way he came

their goals receding behind them in the great switcherroo…

Remember the shooting of Gabrielle Giffords…

~~~
U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords, Democrat:
“We know that silence equals consent when atrocities are committed against innocent men, women, and children. We know that indifference equals complicity when bigotry, hatred and intolerance are allowed to take root. And we know that education and hope are the most effective ways to combat ignorance and despair.”
Tucson, Arizona, Jan. 8, 2011
(Wikipedia)
On January 8, 2011, a mass shooting occurred near Tucson, Arizona. Nineteen people were shot, six of them fatally, with one other person injured at the scene.  The shooting occurred during an open meeting that U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords was holding with members of her constituency in a Safeway parking lot.  Those killed in the incident include United States District Court for the District of Arizona Chief Judge John Roll, one of Rep. Giffords’s staffers, and a little girl.  News reports identified the target of the attack as Giffords, a Democrat representing Arizona’s 8th congressional district.  She was shot through the head at point-blank rang.  Her medical condition was initially described as “critical”.  She survived ~ barely.
A 22-year-old Tucson man, Jared Lee Loughner, was arrested at the scene.  Federal prosecutors have filed five charges against him, including the attempted assassination of a member of Congress, and the assassination of a federal judge. Both of those charges carry the possibility of the death penalty.  On May 25, 2011, Loughner was found by a judge to be incompetent to stand trial based on two medical evaluations.  He’s still incarcerated and, as of this writing, involuntarily sedated.
Rawclyde adds:
Some people, mostly Republicans, dismiss the massacre as the mere act of a deranged individual.  But when Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) asks her supporters to get “armed and dangerous,” and another campaigning Republican suggests “Second Amendment remedies,” and Giffords’ rival even holds an event offering his supporters a chance to shoot an M16 at pictures of the congresswoman, and then Giffords and 18 others are shot down, six fatally, well, I beg to defer.  If you’re running for office or a member of the media and talking like a goon, you’re encouraging the United States of America to become Goon Nation instead of the democracy that more savvy people will it to be…
