Do You Take Cream?

Why

are we getting together

over coffee

?

Why,

I sigh,

why

are we doing this?

Why must

you & I

look each other

in the eye

?

What if

you

have a sty

?

What if

somebody

starts to cry

?

What if I get shy & you get sly

?

What if

Bob Dylan starts singing

in the nex’ booth

?

What if suddenly one of us loses a tooth?

Parading…

Hundreds of demonstrators from 46 states arrived in Washington DC in December, 2011.  They marched and staged demonstrations, including occupying the offices of their senators and representatives, in a brave attempt to take the goverment back from big corporations & the filthy rich… (UPI / Kevin Deitsch)

Another High Noon (#2)

~~~
~~~

I couldn’t tell, I wasn’t sure, my aura was foggy

despite two shots of grace I still felt groggy

this broken-down saloon must be infested with ghosts

each group talked past the other as if the other could not be seen…

~

The Tea Party folks, most old & fat, loaded & cocked their guns

the Wall Street Occupiers pitched their tents & had no funds

“oh Mary, oh Mary,” I cried, “can’t you do something here?”

the barmaid folded her hands, prayed for a more harmonic scene…

~

There is bad ground & good ground

in this American ghost town

in which the haunted saloon moans its sad tune

which echoes & re-echoes around every broken-down thing…

Remember the shooting of Gabrielle Giffords…

~~~
U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords, Democrat:
“We know that silence equals consent when atrocities are committed against innocent men, women, and children. We know that indifference equals complicity when bigotry, hatred and intolerance are allowed to take root. And we know that education and hope are the most effective ways to combat ignorance and despair.”
Tucson, Arizona, Jan. 8, 2011
(Wikipedia)
On January 8, 2011, a mass shooting occurred near Tucson, Arizona. Nineteen people were shot, six of them fatally, with one other person injured at the scene.  The shooting occurred during an open meeting that U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords was holding with members of her constituency in a Safeway parking lot.  Those killed in the incident include United States District Court for the District of Arizona Chief Judge John Roll, one of Rep. Giffords’s staffers, and a little girl.  News reports identified the target of the attack as Giffords, a Democrat representing Arizona’s 8th congressional district.  She was shot through the head at point-blank rang.  Her medical condition was initially described as “critical”.  She survived ~ barely.
A 22-year-old Tucson man, Jared Lee Loughner, was arrested at the scene.  Federal prosecutors have filed five charges against him, including the attempted assassination of a member of Congress, and the assassination of a federal judge. Both of those charges carry the possibility of the death penalty.  On May 25, 2011, Loughner was found by a judge to be incompetent to stand trial based on two medical evaluations.  He’s still incarcerated and, as of this writing, involuntarily sedated.
Rawclyde adds:
Some people, mostly Republicans, dismiss the massacre as the mere act of a deranged individual.  But when Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) asks her supporters to get “armed and dangerous,” and another campaigning Republican suggests “Second Amendment remedies,” and Giffords’ rival even holds an event offering his supporters a chance to shoot an M16 at pictures of the congresswoman, and then Giffords and 18 others are shot down, six fatally, well, I beg to defer.  If you’re running for office or a member of the media and talking like a goon, you’re encouraging the United States of America to become Goon Nation instead of the democracy that more savvy people will it to be…
Another High Noon (#1)
T’was bad ground & holy ground
in this American ghost town
in which the haunted saloon whistled its tune
which sounded forth shrilly especially around high noon…
~
There was no more whiskey
no more tables no more chairs
one wall was missing & half the roof
dust was thick where a rooster roosted
I wobbled on the last stool at the counter
Holy Mary the barmaid poured me a shot
a shot of grace
& I gulped it down.
~
In one corner stood some Tea-Party fumblers
in another some Occupy-Wall-Street tumblers
all were a-worry over the top 10% of the rich paying a fair share
but the flapping of the right & the rapping of the left
these wingers of the left & the right
never got together & that afternoon was icy as dark dark night
here
in the ghost town called Love.
~
There’s bad ground & holy ground
in this American ghost town
where the haunted saloon whistles its windy tune
which sounds forth so shrilly especially around high noon…
